Don’t let the mild autumn weather fool you – the Festive Season is just around the corner, and you’d better act fast if you’re not fully prepared to meet the potential rush of merrymakers heading for bars, clubs and restaurants.
To be honest, we’re confident that anyone involved in the licensing trade will have most of their ducks in a row by now: suppliers sorted, staff rotas settled, social media posts lined up and ready to go. But one crucial element may have been overlooked – and doing so could prove, literally, costly.
Temporary licence extensions – TENs – are, of course, necessary for any change to existing licensing hours, and while every licence-holder knows about them, the Christmas and New Year build-up can be so full-on that they can be neglected.
The limit for TENs is 21 days or 15 notices per premises in a calendar year, so licence-holders have had to learn to be selective about their use. No point holding a two-week, late night summer event then scratching your head as all your competitors welcome late-night revellers on Christmas Eve while you’re shutting up shop.
So scheduling is important, and so is timing. Submissions for a licence extension must be made to local authorities with plenty of notice, so there really isn’t any time to lose, as TENs applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered. A late submission means there won’t be any room for negotiation should police or the local authority issue a counter notice for your TENs application.

- Christmas Eve, December 24th – December 9th
- Christmas Day, December 25th – December 10th
- Boxing Day, December 26th – December 10th
- New Year’s Eve, December 31st – December 12th
- New Year’s Day*, January 1st – December 12th
